The New Year’s Day cultural experience course of Confucius Classroom at Riga Technical University carried out as scheduled

On December 31, 2021, Beijing time, the online New Year’s Day cultural experience course of Confucius Classroom at Riga Technical University was carried out as scheduled and conducted smoothly. It is not easy to get together under the epidemic, but it has never stopped students from learning Chinese and Chinese culture. As the New Year’s Day is coming, Chinese teacher Liu Yiyao and the students of Chinese Basic class experienced the warm festive atmosphere through vivid and interesting paper-cutting activities.

Under the epidemic, the Internet has set up different air classes for us. From the initial Skype platform to the Voov meeting, students can learn Chinese in more diverse forms and have a better experience. At the beginning of the class, we had a dictation and reviewed the content learned in the last lesson. Jurģis Zemītis, Marta Zemīte and Laima Bērziņa all did a good job, especially Laima, who could write many Chinese characters according to the correct stroke orders, which is joyful. Then, proceeding from the knowledge about the dates we learned in the last lesson we came to the New Year’s day-the first day of the New Year, so we learned and practiced the sentence “Happy New Year’s day” in Chinese. In this festive holiday, we couldn’t help thinking of red and the unique paper-cut art. First of all, I introduced what is paper cutting, then we learned a series of words related to it, and appreciated the colorful forms of paper cutting, which is amazing! Next we learned paper cutting together, which is the most interesting part. We made the “red double xi” which represents the festive meaning (Double happy), then everyone took out the prepared paper, pencil and scissors, followed the steps and began to cut paper. When they were done, they showed me the pretty paper-cuts very happily. Finally, I showed the students some more beautiful paper-cuts so that they can continue to cut after class.

Paper-cutting has a long history, and it contains people’s love and best wishes for life, so it’s also listed as a world intangible cultural heritage. At the end of the class, we learned to say Happy New Year in Chinese, and I wish everyone a healthy, happy and fruitful new year!
