Teachers and Students of Transport and Telecommunication Institute wish you a happy New Year of the Ox

In the sound of firecrackers, in a hurry to go back home, we celebrate in the long-awaited Spring Festival. Every family enjoy their happy New Year. Even in the thick of the Spring Festival, volunteer teachers are still giving Chinese lessons to students diligently. How could the Chinese class during the Spring Festival be less than an introduction to our most important festival!

During the period of February 8, 2021 to February 19, 2021, the Chinese language course of Transport and Telecommunication Institute launched an online culture course with the theme of “Spring Festival”. The “Spring Festival” cultural course consists of three parts: the origin of the Spring Festival, the introduction of the customs, volunteer teacher Wu Yanli sharing her own celebration of Spring Festival and students sharing their own national festivals. Students are looking forward to the end of the epidemic and coming to China to feel the atmosphere of the Spring Festival. The volunteer teachers also thanked the students for sharing such colorful Latvian festivals, and welcome the students to China.

At the beginning of the course, Wu Yanli, the volunteer Chinese teacher, played two short films to give the students a preliminary understanding of the Spring Festival. The interesting and vivid short films made the students understand the origin, inheritance and customs of the Spring Festival, which aroused their interest in the Spring Festival. Then, teacher Wu Yanli divided the Spring Festival into three parts: before the Spring Festival, on the day of the Spring Festival and after the Spring Festival, and gave them a detailed introduction. For example, before the introduction of the Spring Festival, teacher introduced the “Spring Festival travel rush”, which is known as the largest annual human population migration, do Spring Festival shopping, pasting Spring Festival couplets and so on. The students were very curious about them and asked many interesting questions.  After the introduction of Spring Festival, in order to make the students closer to feel the Spring Festival atmosphere, volunteer teachers WuYanLi shared her Spring Festival, such as real-time sharing her family reunion dinner with the students, her home decorations, Spring Festival gala, etc. And the students have also shared their status in real time with the teacher, as a snowy Latvia and their lovely kitten, and so on. In addition, Wu Yanli shared a documentary about the Spring Festival to the students, and let them watch it after class, so that the students could have a deeper understanding of the Spring Festival. Learning through sharing, isn’t it a happy thing?

In the next class, the students offered to share their own national holidays to the volunteer teachers. Students made PPTs and shared them in Chinese to the teacher in class. Through the introduction of students, teacher Wu Yanli learned about the origin, celebration forms, customs about Latvian festivals such as Latvian City Day, Latvian National Song and Dance Celebration Day, Latvian Celebration Day and even Irish St. Patrick’s Day. Teacher Wu Yanli said it is a happy thing to benefit herself in the teaching.

It is a meaningful and wonderful thing to learn about other cultures and histories while spreading Chinese culture. With more knowing about each other, there could be more  understanding about other; With more understanding about each other, there could the world be more peaceful. I wish you all the best in your work and in good health in the Year of the Ox!
