On November 1, 2020 local time, Riga Daugavgriva Secondary School finally launched an online Chinese course. Affected by the epidemic, volunteers of Chinese teachers could not arrive in Latvia for the time being. In order to ensure the progress of students’ Chinese learning, the Riga Daugavgriva Secondary School actively discussed the curriculum arrangement with the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, and finally decided to divide the online Chinese course into four different grade groups.

After the overall arrangement of Eļena Židkova, Chinese teacher of Riga Daugavgriva Secondary School, it was determined to use the ZOOM platform for online teaching. This is the first Chinese class in Riga Daugavgriva Secondary School since the end of the course last May. The teachers and students are very excited. Zhu Bofan, the Chinese teacher volunteer introduced themselves to each other. After gaining a certain understanding, they enjoyed the video of introducing China. Looking at the beautiful scenery in the video, many students expressed their hope to travel and study in China. After that, the teacher showed the students Chinese traditional talent works such as Chinese knot, paper-cut, Peking Opera facial makeup, etc. the students all liked it very much. What’s more, some students even took out their own Chinese knots. Zhu Bofan also showed the gourd silk to the students, and the students were imitating it. At the end of the class, the students also sang the Chinese song “Happy New Year” to the teacher. It was really lively!

2020 is destined to be an extraordinary year. No matter how hard the journey is, we cannot stop our enthusiasm for Chinese learning. The beginning of online teaching has aroused students’ desire for Chinese learning. Crossing the mountains and seas and working together, teachers and students are eager to meet in Latvia as soon as possible!
