THE 12TH CHINESE BRIDGE COMPETITION IN LATVIA

With the support of “Chinese Bridge Fund” established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, the 12th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition in Latvia, sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Latvia, organized by Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, co-organized by the Faculty of Humanities at University of Latvia, Confucius Centre at Stradins University, Vidzeme University, Riga Technical University, Daugavpils University, Rezekne University, Riga Culture Secondary School, Riga No.34 Secondary School, Riga No.68 Secondary School, Smiltenes Center Secondary School and Smiltenes Gymnasium, will be held on April 21st , 2015.
1. Purpose
The purpose of holding this competition is to promote Chinese language and culture in Latvia, to provide a platform for Chinese language learners in Latvia, to show their achievements in learning Chinese, to learn from and communicate with each other, to motivate their interest and enthusiasm to learn Chinese and to improve their understanding of Chinese language and culture. In addition, the competition aims at selecting the qualified candidates for the upcoming 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students and 8th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students which will be held in China.

3. Eligibility
Latvian residents whose mother tongue is not Chinese
4. Classification of Participants and Requirements for Application
Three divisions or seven levels will be divided into based on the contestants’ ages and their years of studying Chinese
I. Adults and College Students Division
(1) Primary Level: Undergraduates in enrollment or non-students (with the ages of 18-30) or Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese less than 1 year (including 1 year)
(2) Intermediate Level: Undergraduates in enrollment or non-students (with the ages of 18-30) or Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese 1-3 years (including 3 years)
(3) Advanced Level: Undergraduates in enrollment or non-students (with the ages of 18-30) or Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese more than 3 years
II. Teenagers Division
(1) Primary Level: Students (with the age of 12-18 )
(2) Intermediate Level: Students (with the age of 12-18 )
(3) Advanced Level: Students (with the age of 12-18 )
III. Children Division
Pupils (under the age of 12)
5. Contents of Competition
1. General Requirements
(1) Written Examination (only for Adults and College Students Division): To test the contestants’ mastery of Chinese language and China’s culture and situation
(2) Making a Speech in Chinese (without manuscript, 2-3 minutes): It should be referred to the knowledge of Chinese language and China’s culture and situation, etc.
(3) Chinese Talent Show: It might be one of talents showed, which should be referred to China’s songs, dances, folk arts, musical instruments, calligraphy, painting, paper-cutting and Kong Fu, etc. The contestants also can show their native folk culture making use of one of Chinese Talents)
2. Specific Requirements
I. Adults and College Students Division
(1) Primary Level
A. Written Examination (60 minutes):It will be held in a week prior to the final
competition
B. Making a Speech in Chinese on a Topic (3 minutes)
C. Chinese Talent Show (2-3 minutes)
(2) Intermediate Level
A. Written Examination (60 minutes):It will be held in a week prior to the final
competition
B. Making a Speech in Chinese on a Topic (3 minutes)
C. Chinese Talent Show (2-3 minutes)
D. Answering the Question(s) on the Spot (related to question fixed in advance)
(3) Advanced Level
A. Written Examination (60 minutes):It will be held in a week prior to the final
competition
B. Making a Speech in Chinese on a Topic (3 minutes)
C. Chinese Talent Show (2-3 minutes)
D. Answering the Questions on the Spot (related to the topic of contestant’s speech or Talent Show)
Notes: ① Relevant references and reviewing materials will be published on the websites of each registry; ② The content of Chinese Talent Show can be chosen by contestants who can be rewarded with extra scores by the Committee of Judges based on their performances on the spot.
II. Teenagers Division
(1) Primary Level
A. Self-introducing (2 minutes)

(2) Intermediate Level
A. Self-introducing (2 minutes)
B. Making a Speech on a Topic (1-2 minutes)

(3) Advanced Level
A. Self-introducing + Making a Speech on a Topic(2-3 minutes)
B. Answering Three Questions (related to common knowledge of Chinese
language and China’s culture and situation)
C. Chinese Talent Show (1-2 minutes)
Notes: ① Relevant references and reviewing materials will be published on the websites of each registry; ② The content of Chinese Talent Show can be chosen by contestants who can be rewarded with extra scores by the Committee of Judges based on their performances on the spot.
III. Children Division
A. Self-introducing (1 minute)

Notes: There is no restriction on content of Chinese Talent Show; the score got can be higher if the content is related to Chinese culture or language.

7. The Preliminary Competition
I. Time: It will be held separately by the organizers of each registry before 5th April
II. Place:It will be decided by the organizers of each registry, but the list of candidates who will participate in the final competition should be sent to Ms. Laura Kregere, the secretary of the Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, by 10th April.
8. Final Competition
I.Time: At 10:00 a.m.on April 21 st (Tuesday)
II.Place:At the Auditorium (on the Second Floor) of Academic Library at University of
Latvia. If the place were changed, a notice should be made later.
III. Address:On Rūpniecības iela 10 in Riga, Latvia
9. Award
I. The first prize, the second prize and the third prize will be separately granted the Champion, Runner-up and Second Runner-up for each level in final competition (21 in total), the superior prizes will be given to the rest of the participants in the final competition. All the recipients of the prizes will be rewarded with trophies and certificates.
II The Champion of the advanced level in Adults and College Students Division and the Champion and Runner-up of the advanced level in Teenagers Division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College and 8th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students as the representatives of Latvia. Their expenses including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance for competition will be undertaken by Chinese Government. In addition, they can acquire 2015/2016 Confucius Institute Scholarship issued by Chinese government for one semester. However, the person(s) who participated in the similar competition earlier in China won’t be able to attend to the competitions mentioned above as the same identity.
III.The Runner-up of the advanced level in Adults and College Students Division and the Champion and Runner-up of the Intermediate level in Teenagers Division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College and 8th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students as audiences of Latvia. Their expenses including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance for competition will be undertaken by Chinese Government. However, the person(s) who participated in the similar competition earlier in China won’t be able to attend to the competitions mentioned above as the same identity.
IV. The Champion of Primary Level and the Champion and Runner-up of the Intermediate and Advanced Levels in Adults and College Students Division, and the Winners (only for High School Graduates) in Teenagers Division will be granted top priorities recommended for 2015/2016 Chinese Government Scholarship.
