THE 12TH CHINESE BRIDGE COMPETITION IN LATVIA

With the support of “Chinese Bridge Fund” established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, the 12th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition in Latvia, sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Latvia, organized by Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, co-organized by the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia, Confucius Centre at Stradins University, Vidzeme University, Daugavpils University, Rezekne University, Riga Technical University, Riga Culture Secondary School, Riga No.34 Secondary School, Riga No.68 Secondary School, Smiltenes Center Secondary School and Smiltenes Gymnasium, will be held on April 21st , 2015.

1. Purpose
The purpose of holding this competition is to promote Chinese language and culture in Latvia, to provide a platform for Chinese language learners in Latvia, to show their achievements in learning Chinese, to learn from each other, to motivate their interest and enthusiasm to learn Chinese and to improve their understanding of Chinese language and culture. In addition, the competition also aims at selecting the qualified candidates for the upcoming 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign college students and for the upcoming 8th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign secondary students which will be held in China.

Latvian residents whose mother tongue is not Chinese

4. Classification of Participants and Requirements for Application
Three divisions and seven levels
I. Adults and College Students Division
(1) Primary Level——18-30 years old undergraduates in enrollment or non-students; Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese less than 1 year (including 1 year)
(2) Intermediate Level——18-30 years old undergraduates in enrollment or non-students; Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese 1-3 years (including 3 years)
(3) Advanced Level——18-30 years old, undergraduates in enrollment or non-students; Adults (without age limit), from 18 to 30 years old, learning Chinese more than 3 years
II. Teenagers Division
(1) Primary Level——12-18 years old
(2) Intermediate Level——12-18 years old
(3) Advanced Level——12-18 years old
III. Children Division
Under 12 years old

5. Contents of Competition
1. General requirements
(1) Test on Chinese language ability and Chinese Culture (only for Adults and College Students Division, including knowledge of Chinese language, culture and situation in China)
(2) Making speech in Chinese (without notes, 2-3 minutes.) covering knowledge of Chinese language, culture and situation in China, etc.
(3) Talent show on Chinese cultural skills (may include Chinese songs, Chinese dancing, folk arts, musical instruments, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, paper-cutting, martial arts, etc. you also can use Chinese to show Latvia culture)
2. Specific Requirements
I. Adults and College Students Division
(1) Primary Level
A. Written examination (60 minutes, one week before the competition)
B. Speech
C. Talent show on Chinese cultural skills (2-3 minutes)
(2) Intermediate Level
A. Written examination (60 minutes, one week before the competition)
B. Speech (3 minutes)
C. Talent Show on Chinese Cultural Skills (2-3 minutes)
D. Answering the questions (specific questions prepared in advance)
(3) Advanced Level
A. Written examination (60 minutes, one week before the competition)
B. Speech (3 minutes)
C. Talent Show on Chinese Cultural Skills (2-3 minutes)
D. Answering the questions (questions regarding the speech and performance on the spot)
Notes: ① Relevant references and reviewing materials will be published on the websites of each registry office; ② The content of the talent show on Chinese cultural skills can be chosen by participants, they can be rewarded with extra marks by the Committee of judges based on their performances on the scene.
II. Teenagers Division
(1) Primary Level
A. Self-introducing (2 minutes)
B. Singing Chinese Songs or Reciting Chinese Poems (2 minutes)
(2) Intermediate Level
A. Self-introducing (2 minutes)
B. Making a Speech with the Theme (1-2 minutes)
C. Talent Show on Chinese Cultural Skills (1-2minutes)
(3) Advanced Level
A. Self-introducing + Making a Speech
(Topic relates to China or Chinese culture)(2-3 minutes)
B. Answering Three Questions
(General knowledge of Chinese Language, Culture and National Conditions)
C. Talent Show on Chinese Cultural Skills (1-2 minutes)
Notes: ① Relevant references and reviewing materials will be published on the websites of each registry office; ② The content of the talent show on Chinese cultural skills can be chosen by participants, they can be rewarded with extra marks by the Committee of judges based on their performances on the scene.
III. Children Division
A. Self-introducing (1 minute)
B. Talent show (1 minute)
Notes: There is no restriction on content of talent show; the score can be higher if the content is related to Chinese culture or Chinese language.

7. The Preliminary Competition
1. Time
Before April 5th 2015 (It will be held separately by the organizers of each registration place)
2. Place
It will be decided by the organizers of each registration place, but the name list of candidates who will participate in the final competition should be sent to the secretary of the Confucius Institute at University of Latvia Laura Zātiņa.

8. Final Competition
1.Time
10:00 a.m., April 21 st (Tuesday), 2015
2.Place
Auditorium, University of Latvia Academic Library (the Second Floor), if the place is changed a notice will be made later.

IX. Award
(1) The first prize, the second prize and the third prize will be given for each level in final competition (9 in total), the superior prizes will be given to the rest of the participants in the final competition. All the recipients of the prizes will be rewarded with trophies and certifications.
(2) The winner of the advanced level in adults and college students division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign college held in Changsha, China, as the representatives of Latvia. The expenses for competition will be undertaken by Chinese Government, including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance. In addition, The winner of the advanced level in adults and college students division an acquire Confucius Institute scholarship issued by Chinese government for one semester in year 2016.
(3)The second prize winner of the advanced level in adults and college students division will be qualified to be present to the final competitions held in China as audiences. The expenses in China will be undertaken by Chinese Government, including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance.
(4) The first place winner of the beginner level and the first, second, third place winners of the intermediate and advanced levels in adults and college students division will get an excellent recommendation for the scholarship.
