The first meeting of the Third Council of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia in South China Normal University

9 December 2014 evening, the first meeting of the Third Council of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia was held in South China Normal University. President of South China Normal University Prof. Liu Ming, vice rector of University of Latvia Prof. Andris Kangro, Confucius Institute at University of Latvia foreign side director Prof. Peteris•Pildegovics , Confucius Institute at University of Latvia Chinese side director Prof. Shang Quanyu and former Chinese side director Prof. Huangming Xi and dean of Office of Confucius Institute of South China Normal University Dai Shu attended the meeting.
The Conference approved the reelection and supplement of additional member of the Council of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, summarized the work of Confucius Institute in 2014, while discussing the work plan of Confucius Institute in 2015.
President of South China Normal University Prof. Liu Ming affirmed the work of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia foreign side director Prof. Peteris•Pildegovics and two Chinese sides directors. He said, among three Confucius Institutes which founded by South China Normal University, Confucius Institute at University of Latvia ran the best. In the future, it will be submitted to Hanban and selected as Advanced Units. He also said, South China Normal University would fully mobilize resources, gather and select qualified teachers in fields of Chinese literature, history, philosophy, aesthetics, art, sports and other subjects, and send them to Latvia for short-term exchange of teaching activitie, according to the demand of CILU.
Vice Rector of University of Latvia Prof. Andris Kangro fully appreciated the work of the two Chinese directors, and expressed expectation to the localization of Chinese language teacher in CILU. He also emphasized the importance of the clear area in cooperation field and breakthrough between the two universities. He also invited President Liu Ming visit Latvia at the right time.
Confucius Institute at University of Latvia foreign side director Prof. Peteris•Pildegovics expressed satisfaction with the cooperation with the Chinese Director, emphasizing cooperation between them has been always carried out on the base of understanding. He also expressed appreciation and satisfaction with the work of Chinese volunteer teachers. CILU needs seven volunteer teachers and two official teachers in the future, so he expected the support of Confucius Institute Headquarter and South China Normal University. In addition, besides Chinese oral teachers, he hoped SCNU would be able to send experts on Chinese culture and history to CILU. Finally, he also hoped Confucius Institute Headquarter and SCNU would continue to support the publishing of his Chinese tool books.
In the end, President Liu Ming concluded that based on the good platform of CILU, South China Normal University and University of Latvia would constantly expand their cooperation and communication in other areas such as scientific research and exchange of students and teachers.
