The fifth Chinese Corner of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia was successfully held

On June 13, 5:30 pm local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia jointly organized the fifth Chinese corner event of this academic year.

The Chinese corner activity was held at the “JiaJiaJia Restaurant” in Riga, and the theme of the activity was “Summer Vacation Fun”. At the beginning of the event, there was a lot of discussion and sharing about their holiday arrangements and interesting summer experiences. Some students said they would participate in a month-long sports camp, some said they would travel around Europe, and some told the audience they were participating in a Chinese study program and would be going to China soon. All of them were full of yearning and anticipation for the upcoming summer life.

After the first round of discussion, Chinese teacher Bai Bingyu unveiled the little egg of this Chinese Corner activity – wrapping Zongzi. Ms. Bai used an interactive way to explain the time, alternative name and origin of the Dragon Boat Festival as well as the Dragon Boat customs such as eating Zongzi, racing dragon boats and hanging mugwort leaves to help everyone understand the Dragon Boat culture in depth. Then, Wang Beiya, a Chinese volunteer teacher, explained and demonstrated how to make Zongzi. Unlike the “popularity” of dumplings, Zongzi was a novelty to the Latvian Chinese learners. Everyone was attracted by the small green object in front of them and stood up to learn how to make Zongzi. Everyone cooperated with each other and finished making delicious Zongzi with their own characteristics. Although the Zongzi was small, the friendship was strong. Through this activity, everyone further understood the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival culture, experienced the charm of Dragon Boat Festival food and deepened their understanding of Chinese traditional festival culture.

At the end of the event, everyone actively used Chinese to order food. The Chinese Corner activity came to an end with a lot of laughter. The students said that every time they participated in the Chinese Corner, it was a new experience and they learned more about the Chinese culture outside the textbook. Let’s look forward to the next exciting Chinese Corner activity!
