When the rain falls in the valley, the duckweed begins to grow; Gu Yu, the Second Marquis, chirps the dove and brushes its feathers; Gu Yu waited for three times, and Dai Sheng descended on the mulberry trees.

On April 20, 2023, one of the twenty-four traditional Chinese solar terms, “Gu Yu”, is also the 14th Chinese Language Day at the United Nations. “In 2010, the United Nations designated Chinese Language Day to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity and to promote equal access to the six official languages of the United Nations.

On the occasion of the celebration of the United Nations Chinese Day, the Confucius Institute of the University of Latvia jointly composed the song “Song of the United Nations Chinese Day”, which was written by Yu Cong Yang (1998-2002), the second Chinese teacher assigned to the University of Latvia by the Chinese Ministry of Education, composed and sung by Wang Lingyi, a poet and singer from Shenzhen, arranged by Wu Xiaolu of Guangdong Ocean University, recorded by Zheng Zhaolin, post-produced by Bai Bingyu, a teacher assigned to the University of Latvia, and Xu Shen, a volunteer teacher. The song is produced by the Confucius Institute of the University of Latvia and produced by the Confucius Institute of the University of Latvia, with post-production by Baili Bingyu and Xu Shen, both volunteer teachers. The song depicts the origin and meaning of the United Nations Chinese Language Day, one of the twenty-four solar terms of the lunar calendar, the Valley Rain, and the contribution of Cangjie, the founder of Chinese writing, to the creation of characters. May this song also give Chinese learners and lovers of Chinese culture around the world a window to experience the beauty of Chinese.

193 national flags are flying in the UN,

6 UN languages have a sonorous rhythm.

Today is Gu Yu Day, the UN Chinese Language Day.

Chinese language nourishes Chinese people’s dream.

 Spring rains give birth to grains; the world is filled with fragrance;

The cuckoos are singing happily; So are mountains and rivers.

On the day, Cang Jie created Chinese Characters,

Making Chinese language heard everywhere.

Languages and cultures are diverse,

The maintenance of peace is the UN’s highest ideal.

The rain will revive the seedlings and the world will flourish.

Multi languages, diverse cultures,

The rain will revive the seedlings and the world will flourish.

Multilingualism builds a bridge of friendly exchanges throughout the world.

The maintenance of peace is the UN’s highest ideal.
