From multiple angles, it showed the students the features of Lingnan culture in Guangzhou and other cities in the Greater Bay Area in all aspects.
Due to COVID-19, the “Chinese Bridge” project was carried out through the “Chinese Plus” platform in the form of “live teaching + video courses”, but received more than one hundred students from from Latvia, Vietnam, Japan, France and France Reunion enrolled enthusiastically and successfully completed all courses and obtained a certificate of completion. Among them, 18 students from Latvia, including Diana Komova, Ilona Balode, and Emilija Marcenko, as well as 11 students from France, Japan, and Vietnam, were rated as “excellent campers”.
As the materials for the talent class are difficult to purchase in Latvia, South China Normal University purchased them in China in December 2020 and mailed them to the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia. The Confucius Institute in Latvia sent them to all students before the start of the winter camp. Professor Shang Quanyu (Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia) mentioned in the closing ceremony that he would like to thank the South China Normal University for providing talent class materials, which brought warmth and strength to them in the epidemic. And Dean Shang also mentioned that this project provides a valuable opportunity for Chinese lovers in Latvia to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture, especially Lingnan culture.
Sixty-nine students from Latvia with different ages and different careers signed up to participate this project. After the completion of the “Chinese Bridge” winter camp, we also received a lot of praise from our students. Wei Lai (Emilija Marcenko) said that although it is a bit regretful that the project is online, but for her, the eight days of intensive Chinese learning has effectively improved her Chinese. She hope that she will have the opportunity to participate such project in the future.
During the “Chinese Bridge” winter camp, the students fully showed their strong love for Chinese and interacted with the teacher and did their homework actively. Beyond doubt, the talent class is the most popular class among students. The students learned about the culture of the “Zodiac” from the paper-cutting of the Chinese zodiac, experienced the charm of the Chinese fan from the production of the blue and white porcelain fan, and understood the drama characters from the painting of the Peking Opera facial makeup and felt the beauty of Chinese costumes from “Clay cheongsam”.

We believe that through the eight-day study, everyone has a better understanding of South China Normal University, Guangzhou, and Lingnan culture. We hope that the students participating in this project can continue to explore the wonderful Chinese world in the future, and hope that their fate with Chinese will last forever!
