Latvia’s first “Chinese Corner” in 2019 was successfully held

Latvia’s first “Chinese Corner” in 2019 was successfully held

On March 7, 2019, Chinese Corner event once again was successfully held on the fourth floor at Faculty of Humanities of University of Latvia. Volunteer teachers from the Confucius Institute, Chinese students studying at Riga Technical University, students from the Faculty of Humanities and students from Riga Culture Middle School took part in, together more than 30 participants. The theme was “Speed Talking”. After all, speaking is the hardest part when learning foreign languages, many people don’t have language partners. Therefore, people are usually very shy to speak language, which they are learning. “Speed talking” solves this problem. All students discuss various topics, while sitting face to face. Chinese speak Latvian, and Latvians speak Chinese. Although not everyone communicate that smoothly, it is a very exciting thing to be teachers of each other. In addition, many high school students of Riga Culture Middle School have just started learning Chinese, so they were not able to ask that much questions in Chinese. However, such practical experience made them feel very satisfied. One student said: “I like Chinese culture, I think it is very interesting, so I am here today because I want to learn more about China.” There were also some Chinese language learners, who already speak very fluently. This activity not only allowed them to meet with old friends to chat in Chinese, but also made them able to share their experience of language learning. For Chinese friends, who learn Latvian, this activity was also very significant, because they could find a language partner to practice Latvian together. Many Latvian students were very impressed by that, surprised to find, that there are so many young Chinese people, who can speak Latvian that well. This is really a very proud thing! This time Chinese Corner event once again proved that more and more Latvians are interested in Chinese and Chinese culture. They also hope that this activity will encourage them to continue studying their beloved  language – Chinese. (Kristīne Baltpurviņa, Veronika Pankratova)
