The Children’s Class of Confucius Institute at Latvia University Held the First Parents’ Meeting

At 7:30 in the evening of November 24, 2014, the classroom of children’s class of Confucius Institute at Latvia University was suddenly bustling. Children took the hand of their parents into the classroom. The small classroom was soon full children and their parents. It turned out that the first parents’ meeting of children’s class during 2014-2015 school year was being held here.
The meeting started in children’s cheerful singing and cute dancing of “two tigers”. After children’s class teacher Jin Jing expressed a warm welcome to the presence of the parents, came the first part– demonstration class. During the fifteen-minute lesson, children made self-introductions first and introduced their parents. Then, the teacher invited parents and children to do a Chinese parent-child game “guess the animal” together. Laughter erupted from time to time. In the Chinese activity “digital adder”, the participants reviewed the Chinese numbers one to ten, and show good computing capability. The demonstration class ended in kids’ lively singing “alphabet song “.
The second process is the learning content presentation of first half of the semester. Teacher introduced the learning contents of children’s language and culture classes in the past two months, course schedule and completion to parents. The third process is students’ individual learning comments. The teacher commented on students’ learning by case, pertinently pointed out the advantages and disadvantages, and gave encouragement and hope. Finally, the teacher explained the vacation time of this semester and the schedule of next semester and sought advice and suggestions for teaching from parents. Parents also had further individual communication with the teacher on the child’s performance in school. At last, parents’ meeting ended in a good atmosphere.
Confucius Institute at Latvia University opened the first children’s Chinese language courses in September this year. There are currently five students. Small class teaching allowed each child has more opportunity to get Chinese language training. Lively and relaxed teaching methods are in line with the characteristics of children’s learning. This was the first time of parents’ meeting in children’s class, which designed to give parents better understand about their children’s performance in school. The teacher hope that by the efforts of home and school together, can children learn fun, and acquire knowledge.
